DAVID YEARWOOD Beginning January, 2013, David and his wife Parks McKinney are honored to own and operate Portland Yoga Studio. David is a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher and recently earned an Intermediate Junior 1 certificate. He also recently completed an eight month direct study apprenticeship with Lois Steinberg, Phd, and Certified Advanced Iyengar Yoga Teacher. All told he has practiced Iyengar Yoga for 22 years and taught for 17, several years of which were spent teaching at the Iyengar Institute of Manhattan under the mentorship of the greatly missed and cherished, Mary Dunn. David's style is supportive, direct, encouraging, light-hearted and insightful. PAMELA RYAN is a Certified Iyengar Yoga teacher. Pamela has been studying Iyengar yoga since 1989. She is a longtime student of Patricia Walden of Cambridge, MA, whom she has assisted in Yogamala's Teacher Training program as well as in various workshops throughout the years. She also travels regularly to Pune, India to study with the Iyengars. To her, teaching is an extension of her practice and an integral part of her life. CHELSEA LACHAPELLE has been studying yoga since 2004. For Chelsea, yoga has become a passion and a way of life. In 2007, she completed a 200-hour Vinyasa YTT with Daren Freisen in Chicago, IL, and in 2008 Chelsea completed a 200-hour Hatha YTT with Tias Little in Santa Fe, NM. Although she has studied a variety of yoga styles, she has consistently been drawn to the Iyengar system. For the last several years Chelsea has studied with Laura Antelmi who is an Intermediate Junior III Iyengar teacher in Boulder, CO. Presently, Chelsea studies with Pamela Ryan, and mentors under David Yearwood at PYS. She is excited to be on track to becoming a certified Iyengar teacher. In August 2012, Chelsea took over teaching for former PYS owner, Stephanie Abrams. She looks forward to sharing the many gifts that practicing and teaching yoga provides. DALE SHEILDS has been practicing Iyengar yoga since 2007 and is registered with the National Yoga Teaching Alliance. This past fall, she completed a 2 year IYNAUS approved teacher training program taught by Janice Vien, certified at the Iyengar Junior Intermediate III level and Jill Johnson, certified at the Intermediate Junior II level. Dale lives in Yarmouth and is now studying with local Iyengar certified teachers as well as making regular trips to Boston to study with Patricia Walden who holds an Iyengar senior advanced certificate. She plans to go up for Iyengar certification in the fall of 2013. Dale enjoys sharing yoga with beginners and brings with her a sense of humor and a passion for lifelong learning gained from 20 years of homeschooling her three children. ABBEY HOPE has pursued her yoga sadhana since 1999 and believes that yoga has changed her life. She has studied regularly with Iyengar Senior teachers Mary Dunn, Joan White, and Patricia Walden, as well as with Carolyn Christie with whom she apprentices. With much rejoicing, Abbey travelled to Pune, India for a recent summer to study with the Iyengar family. She has also studied asana, pranayama, and yoga philosophy at workshops with Geeta Iyengar, Jawarhar Banjara, Gabriella Giubilaro, John Schumacher, Laurie Blakeney, Edwin Bryant, Robert Thurman, and others. Abbey currently holds an Introductory Level I certificate in the Iyengar system and is on track for full certification of Introductory Level II. STEPHANIE ABRAMS is the former owner of PYS. Stephanie is on sabbatical to care for her two young children but hopes to return to teaching at PYS in the spring of 2013! She is a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher. Stephanie began her study of Iyengar Yoga in 1996 in Washington, DC. After a two year teaching apprenticeship with John Schumacher, she began to teach in 2001. She continues her study with Patricia Walden and Peentz Dubble in Boston, MA and with Sharon Conroy of New Orleans, LA. She finds the peace of mind and openness of heart that comes from regular practice indispensible, and hopes to share this with all of her students.
ELAINE G. MCGILLICUDDY Co-founder of PYS in 1987 with her late husband Francis, Elaine is a Certified Iyengar Yoga instructor since 1991. She began teaching yoga in 1980. She has not only participated in many Iyengar yoga workshops in and outside of the US, but has studied with the Iyengars in India. Elaine finds in her deep daily yoga practice, an indispensable lifeline. Elaine is currently taking a sabbatical from teaching to finish work on her books of poetry and memoir/love story. She looks forward to returning to teaching once these projects are completed.
