CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

All Levels: As the name implies, the all levels classes are for all levels of students. Classes will include standing postures, seated postures, forward bends, back bends and inversions. The instructor will gear the class towards the students who are present. Beginners are welcome.

All Levels Intense: Students with injuries or other physical issues are confident in managing necessary props for themselves; class will be taught at a relatively rapid pace and aimed at tapping into sources of vigor and vitality in one's practice.

Beginner/ Level I: These classes are designed for the newcomer to yoga. Students will be given an introduction to yoga postures including standing poses, seated poses and inversions. No previous experience, flexibility or knowledge is required.

Flow: Continuous flow of standing poses, inversions, backbends, and some restorative poses. Invigorating mild workout. Some experience recommended.

Intermediate/Advanced Sequences: This class is geared towards students and teachers with at least six months of experience and an interest in developing or refining a home practice. We will focus on one class of poses in each week (standing poses, forward bends, twists, back bends, inversions, restoratives) and will rotate through these topics throughout the session. You will learn the "classic" sequence of postures. This class is not appropriate for beginners.

Restorative: The combined benefits of gentle stretching, strengthening and toning with soothing, re-energizing restorative postures both active and passive. Suitable for all levels including beginners.

Restorative/ Pranayama: In this session we will experience gentle stretching and strengthening as well as the deep opening and release that is possible in longer-held supported poses.  The gifts of this practice include the gradual unblocking of energy pathways, an access to deeper stillness, and a body/mind primed for pranayama, the art of yogic breathing.  Sequences will be adapted to all levels, including long-term practitioners and beginners.

Level I/II: Level I/II is for students who would like to begin a more dedicated practice. Inversions (headstand, shoulderstand, handstand) will be practiced regularly, as well as a whole variety of standing and seated postures, forward bends and back bends. The instructor will assume student has previous experience.

Level II: In this challenging class, poses will be deepened, the effects of different sequences explored, and the subtle aspects of posture and breath refined.   This class is geared for the student with at least 1 year of experience.

Life-Long Yoga: Open to people of any mid-life age and older, intermediate students and newcomers also. Learn a practice that you can continue for the rest of your life. Elaine, the founder of Portland Yoga, began the practice of yoga at the age of 40, and continues well into her 70's. Become inspired from her experience! Elaine is currently on sabbatical until Spring 2012, at which time the Life Long class will resume.

Pranayama: The practice of yogic breath control. In Yoga Sutra II.52, Patanjali states "Pranayama removes the veil covering the light of knowledge and heralds the dawn of wisdom". Pranayama, the sensitive expansion and restraint of prana, si the gateway to concentration and greater clarity of mind. Asana practice primes the body to receive and restrain the subtelties of prana. This practice is not suitable for beginners. Minimum one year of Iyengar yoga experience is required.

Pre/Post Natal Yoga: Learn safe and helpful postures for all stages of pregnancy. No experience required. You may join this class at any time during the session. You may pro-rate your registration according to your due date.

Yamuna Body Rolling®: A unique approach to health and fitness that helps people feel better, move more freely, gain strength, and eliminate pain.  Specially designed balls will; increase muscle length, create joint mobility, promote healing of injuries, tone muscles, energize nerve roots and vital organs, dislodge tension and discomfort, enhance blood flow, and stimulate bone.  An ideal practice for everyone, at all fitness levels, for dramatic and immediate results.  Carefully planned routines match the body's own logic and order to re-educate one's innate body awareness. (Yamuna Body Rolling® classes may not be used for make-ups for other classes.)

Yoga for Teens and Young Adults: Geared toward students ages 15-25 including more rapid pacing and intense postures balanced with plenty of restoration.
